bio

Janette King is a Caribbean-Canadian producer and artist, who released her debut LP, What We Lost, on June 25, 2021. The album received acclaim from among others, Complex,  Hypebeast, & KEXP, while also charting Canadian campus radio and landing on Bandcamp’s bestseller list for weeks.  King’s debut album presents a wise-beyond-its-year maturity, arriving as something a little more experienced than the title “debut album” would normally suggest. It’s a statement from Janette King that, in a similar way to contemporaries such as Victoria Monét and Snoh Aalegra, fuses deeply personal assessments of life with glass-half-full soundscapes, establishing King as one of Canada’s surest new voices.

King has performed all around North America and the UK, sharing the stage with artists such as Cupcakke, Sudan Archives, Jamila Woods, & King Khan and performing at festivals such as Ottawa Bluesfest, Vancouver Jazz Fest, Montreal Jazz Fest, & Noise Pop in San Francisco.

Most recently, King wrote and performed on two tracks off Gayance’s album Mascarade which came out in March 2023 and landed on the esteemed Polaris Music Prize shortlist. King also released 2-track dance EP How Sad in June 2023 for Pride Month which celebrated the origins of house music that came out of Black and gay nightclubs in New York City. You can expect her sophomore LP Summer 2024.
